Emma Gifford has learned to be braver as an artist. No longer fearing mistakes and open to taking risks, the PCS senior unveiled her inaugural solo exhibition at the Arts Council for Wyoming County’s (ACWC) Main Gallery in Perry on May 3. The 30 pieces showcased were the culmination of a year-long intensive study with master potter Clare Keating.
Emma was named the 2023-24 Youth Visual Artist Scholar by the ACWC, which paved the way for her work with Keating. During the application process, Emma had to write an essay explaining what she wanted to achieve during the year of study and provide samples of her previous work.
“I was shocked that I was selected,” said Emma. “I didn’t think I’d be good enough. It was fun being a part of the program because it’s such a unique experience.”
The exhibition, which ran until May 31, allowed Emma to not only showcase her talents, but also sell her artwork. She selected the exhibition’s title, “Variations,” because the collection included something for everyone, including cups, bowls, and other items perfected on the potter’s wheel. Emma is particularly fond of her teapots.
During her year of study, Emma worked with Keating two days a week, focusing mostly on pottery, but finding ways to incorporate glasswork into pieces. Glass and ceramics are Emma’s preferred mediums but, while she had less experience on the potter’s wheel, she was open to learning more about the process. Abandoning her comfort zone and taking risks ultimately helped Emma grow as an artist.
“Sometimes you have to realize it’s not the way you want it but it’s still unique and beautiful,” she said. “What’s important is that I like my work, that I value it rather than what other people think.”
Looking ahead to the future, Emma plans to attend Keuka College to study Art and Design, focusing specifically on painting and drawing. The college offers annual internships, which is where Emma hopes to focus on her passion for glasswork.
In her senior year, Emma is taking Drawing and Painting, as well as Independent Art, at PCS with teacher Stephanie Emerson. She previously took Studio in Art, Ceramics I and II, Photography, and Design. Emerson said Emma has exhausted all of the options for studying glasswork at PCS, and is exploring and experimenting with techniques she learned in previous courses for her Independent Art class.
“Emma demonstrates openness and curiosity for the arts and has impressed me with her ability and passion to be creative,” said Emerson.
